Open to all students regardless of major, the Discover Your Career in Healthcare Conference will help you learn about the various career options in the healthcare field. The conference connects students with off-campus partners to help further their career as a future health professional.

Day 1, Learn about Careers in Healthcare – Tuesday, November 6 

Come learn more about different professions in the healthcare industry. During the keynote address and Healthcare Professionals panel, you’ll get to hear about many career opportunities ranging from medicine to research. Afterwards, stay to network and ask questions to both employers and UF Professional College representatives.

4:30-4:50 PM – Keynote Address by Jim Ayala
Jim Ayala is an alumni of UF and was a student in the College of Public Health and Health Professions. He is the CEO of Rescue Hearing Inc. here in Gainesville’s Innovation Hub, and they are an organization that is striving to develop gene therapies to cure hearing loss. Jim has had a number of experiences in different roles within the healthcare field from oncology and drug development to working for Blue Cross Insurance.

5:00-6:00 PM – Healthcare Professionals Panel
Panelists: M.D. / Ph.D. (Research), Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy, Healthcare Administration, Psychology, Pharmacy, and Dentistry

6:10-7:30 PM – Employer and UF Professional Colleges Roundtable Networking

Employers: PhysAssist Scribes Inc., DCF’s State-Operated Mental Health Treatment Facilities, Wellcare Health Plan Inc., Army Medical Recruiting, the Villages Healthcare Team, Rescue Hearing Inc.

Professional Colleges: UF College of Pharmacy, UF Masters in Dietetics, UF Nursing Program, UF College of Medicine, UF Occupational Therapy, UF College of Dentistry, UF Equal Access Clinic,Pre-health Post-Bac (PHPB)

Day 2, $5 CPR Certification* and Mock Scribe – Wednesday, November 7

Conference attendees can register to get CPR certified for only $5 with Gator CPR. PhysAssist will also be doing a mock scribe workshop where students will get to learn the skills needed to become a scribe for healthcare professionals.

Day 3, Clinical Skills Day – Thursday, November 8

Experience first-hand what it is like to be a healthcare professional. Through U.S. Army Medical’s hands-on suture clinic*, students will be able to learn about suturing and participate in a demonstration. The College of Dentistry, Occupational Therapy Program, College of Pharmacy, and Dietetics Program will teach students about their respective professions through engaging and interactive clinical skill workshops.

*Attendance is limited for the Suture Clinic, and those sessions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis

Dietetics Program

Nutrition-Focused Physical Exam: A Hands-On Process for Assessing Nutrition Status

Join us for an immersive workshop on performing a Nutrition- Focused Physical Exam. This type of physical examination is performed by a registered dietitian nutritionist to assess a patient’s nutrition status. During Hour 1, we will learn how to examine for fat and muscle wasting, and during Hour 2 we will learn how to examine the orofacial region for signs of chewing and swallowing problems.
