A non-linear career path is now the norm. Gators, don’t be afraid to  change the direction of your career into a new field or industry. Career pivoting isn’t a complete transformation, instead it takes into account the skills, experiences, accomplishments, and knowledge you’ve gained in your professional life and applies them to a new path.

Examples of a career pivots include:

• Marketing to freelance writing.
• Project manager to consultant.
• Event planning to fundraising.

UF alumna, Syleena Powell, will provide gators with the knowledge and guidance on how to navigate a career pivot.

About the presenter:

Syleena Powell is a solution-oriented Human Resource professional. In 2018, she successfully obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida where she was a Ronald E. McNair Scholar and Campus Ambassador for several on-campus organizations. Powell has since matriculated to serve as the Senior Human Resources Generalist for a Fort Lauderdale, Florida start-up where she oversees talent management, compensation and compliance operations. She overcame the societal pressures of being raised in a low income, single parent home and was able to defeat several odds including being the first to graduate in her family from both undergraduate and soon, graduate school in May 2022 with an MBA from Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship. Powell is also a member of various professional business and human resource organizations, including the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA), as well as a professional certificate recipient from Cornell University in Women’s Entrepreneurship. She Powell is passionate about people development and is honored to pay it forward to incoming Gators.
