What is the Master and Doctoral Student Industry Meet-Up?

The Master and Doctoral Industry Meet-Up is a new University of Florida career event designed to connect graduate students with employers from industry career pathways. Graduate students offer unique skill-sets and experiences- this event allows employers to learn about the value of hiring students with advanced degrees. During this networking meet-up, graduate students and employers to engage in open conversations and learn about career opportunities outside of academia.

Different than a traditional career fair, the Master and Doctoral Student Industry Meet-Up encourages industry connections through intentional conversation starters and discussion that makes networking natural and impactful. During the event, you will have the opportunity to talk with employers about professional development topics, information about their organization, and opportunities for internships and full-time employment.

Master and Doctoral Student Industry Meet-Up is an open networking event for UF graduate students and advanced degree holding alumni to connect with employers and industry professionals. Employers attending the event are looking to recruit UF graduate students and alumni for a variety of experiences- including internships and jobs. Employers also attend to support graduate students in building their professional networks. This event allows students and employers to meet each other in a more casual, relaxed environment.

Networking is one of the most common ways to hear about employment opportunities and industry career pathways. By attending Master and Doctoral Student Industry Meet-Up, you can walk away with organization and industry knowledge that can help enhance your resume as well as guide you on your career path.

1. Research: Master and Doctoral Student Industry Meet-Up can be a great opportunity to learn more about different career pathways outside of the academic space. You are well-qualified for a variety of careers beyond the fields on your diplomas.

Different recruiters might have different styles- try to be flexible with the person you are speaking to. During the event, employers will have different professional development conversation topics on their name tag. These conversation starters can help you develop confidence going into the conversation.
Some employers might ask for your resume right away. Others might not. Make sure you have questions or topics to talk about if they want you to ask questions. If you need to practice your elevator pitch, drop by extended Express Drop-In hours the week before showcase.

Master and Doctoral Student Industry Meet-Up is a more casual and relaxed environment designed for conversations. Employers will expect you to be professional, genuine, and curious. Be able to introduce yourself and your key skills briefly and clearly, and be prepared to ask questions about their organization.
