When planning for your career, the first step is to think and reflect on YOU. It is important for you to take time to explore what you are good at, what you like to do and what is important to you in life- your strengths, values and interests. There also might be other personal, unique factors that could influence your career choices. Your major is not the only factor that determines your career options- you have many possibilities.

Questions to Ask Yourself

You can also reflect on your past experiences or goals at the University of Florida. These ideas can provide clues for figuring out many meaningful career possibilities.It is also important to explore the variety of career options that you have as a University of Florida student and beyond. Sometimes it is also helpful to look at examples of what careers are out there, as well as industry information including salary, job tasks, educational requirements, and job descriptions.

• If I am guaranteed to be successful and earn a good living, what type of work would I want to do?
• Where would I live?
• What type of work environment sounds exciting to me?
• What would my average day look like?

Using the Career Connections Center

The Career Connections Center can support you in learning about yourself and career options in the following ways:

    • Use our online tool, CHOMP. CHOMP consists of a series of engaging videos and activities that will help you explore majors, discover your interests, research career options and develop a personalized action plan.
    • Apply to be a part of the Career Success Institute. CSI is a six-week career and leadership cohort program where you are learn about your career potential from your strengths, skills, and interests.
    • Visit the Majors and Minors Fair in the Spring semester to meet with representatives from different colleges and departments across campus.
    • Attend a Career Conversation. Career Conversations are informal, small group conversations where you can connect to a career center staff member and other students who might have similar career-related questions.
    • Check out your Career Community and explore customized tools and information about specific industries, colleges and communities. You can also get connected to your Embedded Liaison staff member.
    • Talk it out in a Career Planning Appointment with a career center staff member.

    • The Occupational Outlook Handbook can help you find career information on duties, education and training, pay, and outlook for hundreds of occupations.
    •  O*NET has detailed descriptions of hundreds of career options, but also has career exploration tools including self-assessments.
    • What Can I Do With This Major? will help you connect majors to potential career paths. Learn about many career areas, the types of employers that hire people with each major, and strategies that will help you prepare for career paths as a student.
